Card Security

1. Purchases in retail stores: "CHIP and PIN" technology

All the Kutxabank cards feature a chip as a security element which protects against cloning and against the risk of fraud as it validates the data of the card holder in an encrypted way. Thus, you just have to enter a personal identification number (PIN) only known to you when using the card to shop in retail stores. With this system, it is no longer necessary to sign the receipt when carrying out the transaction.

2. Purchases on the internet

2.1 VINI virtual card: you will not have to provide your credit card number, since you may generate a fictitious card number for each purchase, with the maximum limit and the expiry date you wish. This service is free of charge and you only need to have registered for our Online Banking service.

2.2 Secure commerce: Kutxabank participate in the secure payment systems Verified by Visa and MasterCard Secure Code. When shopping and paying at a web store which offers this service you will be redirected to a "secure" site where you will have to enter your identification code from the online banking service. This way, you will be the only one who can use your card to make the purchase and the seller will be certain that the purchaser is the legitimate user of the card.

5. SMS alerts 

Receive a SMS alert every time you carry out a transaction with your card above an amount you have stated, when it reaches a cumulative daily limit and, in any case, when it exceeds EUR500 in purchases. If you receive a message regarding a transaction you have not made, phone 900 44 55 66 immediately.

6. Transaction monitoring

If our security system detects some suspicious activity in your card, we will contact you to verify the charges and we will block the transaction or the card if it is a fraudulent transaction.

7. Free antifraud insurance

 include free insurance which covers fraudulent use and forgery. 

8. Incident reporting and card blocking

Permanent 24-hour service: 900 44 55 66 to report any incident or quickly cancel your cards in the event of loss or theft.

Below are some preventive measures you must take to protect yourself and minimize the risk of becoming a victim of card fraud:

  • Management of your secret 4-digit number (PIN)
    • Memorize your PIN and do not tell anybody.
    • Never keep it written down in your wallet or next to the card to prevent its falling in the wrong hands in case of loss or theft.
    • Do not choose a number which coincides with a number that is directly related to you, such as the car registration number, date of birth, ID card number...
    • When you enter the PIN while making a purchase, do not let others see it.
    • Change the PIN regularly. You can do so at any branch office or automated teller machine of Kutxabank.
  • If you have a credit card, adapt the limit to your needs.
  • Always keep your card in sight when pay for a purchase.
  • Revise your account statements regularly and check that there are no suspicions transactions.

  • Sign on the signature panel on the back of the card as soon as you receive it.
  • Never give your credit card number or personal information over the phone unless you are the one who has phoned to carry out a transaction.
  • When you receive a new card at home to replace the previous one
    • Activate it as soon as it arrives
    • Sign it
    • Destroy the expired card 
  • Use in automated teller machines:
    • Be aware of the people around you
    • After completing the transaction, secure the card and the cash immediately. Count the money later, in the safety of your car or home.
    • Before arriving at the ATM, take some minutes to make any arrangements or prepare any documents you may need. This will reduce the amount of time you need to spend at the ATM to the minimum.
  • In the event of loss, theft or unauthorized use of your card, report it as soon as you become aware of it on 900 44 55 66 and we will block it to prevent any fraudulent use.
